                                                                     SEPTEMBER  2009

COMMANDER’S MESSAGE:  We are into the 2nd month of the new fiscal year and the teamwork is amazing. We have an executive board that is second to none and other volunteers who are more than willing to step up to the pate. It is truly going to be a great year.  The September meeting is going to be a BBQ, so if you have not signed up yet, there is still time. You can email me directly at yourlegion@aol.com or leave a phone message at 707 857-3431. The camping trip is set for Oct. 15, 16 & 17th. It will be at Casini Ranch Campground in Duncan Mills, and you are welcome to come stay one to three nights. There is full hookups with water, electric and TV for about $36.00 per night. We have seven couples signed up and the cut off will be Sept. 5, 2009.  We have also started a new membership drive. Each month, the member who brings in the most new members will receive a free breakfast, lunch or dinner for two at a local restaurant. The quote for this month:

“Accept the challenges so that you can feel the exhilaration of victory”.  General George Patton, Jr.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:  Again I wish to thank all of you who have stepped up to the plate and accepted offices and chairmanships. Unfortunately, we have not had a very good start to our new year as we have lost tow of our most active members. They will be sorely missed. With the passing of Woodie Stiles we have lost our Historian. With that chair vacant we also have to add to the list Children & Youth, and Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation. If any of you wish to help please call me at 838-6227.

On a happier note, our September meeting will be a short one as the Post is putting on a B-B-Q. The Unit will bring the side dishes.  Hope to see you all there.-  Judy

POST ADJUTANT MESSAGE:  Our Legion year is off to a rip-roaring start. We had a great crowd at our August meeting and Commander Doug had arranged for an outstanding speaker, Ellie McCarthy, who was a Pan Am stewardess who served on the Pan Am flights that ferried our Vietnam troops during the war.  Our membership is now over 200 strong for the 2010 year and we are asking that you take a moment and renew now. You have received your renewal notices and our goal is to make our Commander, as well as Post, a 100% Commander/Post by December 31. We also wish to continue our “motto” “The fastest growing Post north of the Golden Gate.” We encourage you to have your wives join our Auxiliary Unit which is the finest in our District and Area. The dues are reasonable and the ladies promote many worthwhile programs as well as give our Post the support that makes us so successful. If you have a buddy or relative eligible for membership, bring him/her in, we will sponsor his/her first year’s membership in recognition of your membership and your service to our country.  We are pleased to announce that we are starting up a Sons of The American Legion Squadron, so if you have sons or know of sons and grandsons of those that have served in the armed forces, they may be eligible. Contact Tom Grimes or myself, or better yet, attend our September meeting (BBQ).

A special tanks to Stan Shusda, Frank Jerins, Tony Caporale and Brent Gibson for their assistance in manning membership booth at the Pacific Coast Air Museum air show that weekend of August. 15-16. We had front row seats and spread the work on our membership. Some of us will be attending the National Convention in Louisville, KY and will provide you with the information and goals of the Legion for our next Legion year.

If you are not enrolled in the VA we encourage you to do so. There is now legislation underway for the VA to accept Medicare which will lead to many of us being able to use the services of the VA. As you may know, the VA Hospitals and related medical care are rated among the top provides of care in the United States. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me: Bud Simmons – 707 971-0523 – legionbuddy@sbcglobal.net.

DON’T’ FORGET TO DROP YOUR DUES IN THE MAIL.

UNIT MEMBERSHIP MESSAGE:  We’re off to a slow start with 29 paid members as of our August meeting on 8/13.  We expect a big increase before our next report as the Dues Notices from National will be coming out very soon. Please pay promptly and get us off to a good start. It was so nice to see five prospective members in attendance; hope they’re not scared away by our unusually long meeting, due to having the annual reading and discussion of our Bylaws and Policies.  Our meetings are usually only about an hour, so hope they will come back and join us.

POST AND UNIT CHAPLAINS:       Harold Enzenauer  Navy WWII and Harlan Mariani Army WWII both entered Post Everlasting. Our condolences go to both their families. Memorial donations can still be made in Woodie Stiles and Millie Gagliardo’s names payable to the American Legion Auxiliary, PO Box 174, Healdsburg, CA 95448. All the donations will go towards memorial scholarships in both their names to a graduating senior at Healdsburg High School this coming year. We will be taking donations through the end of December, if you wish to donate. Thank you.

EDITORS MESSAGE:  THE POST WOULD LIKE TO START SAVING SOME MONEY BY SENDING YOUR BULLETINS BY EMAIL.  PLEASE SEND US YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS AND YOU WILL RECEIVE YOUR BULLETINS A LOT SOONER.  SEND YOUR NAME AND EMAIL ADDRESS TO: sotoyome 111 @ aol.com. Attention: Bob Taylor

Also if you are interested in taking over the bulletin each month please contact Bob or Melanie 894-0857 and let them know. It is time to pass this on and hopefully someone will step up and offer.  Thank you.
